For some visitors of a certain age, Nicaragua will always evoke memories of violent guerrilla warfare, but that doesn’t represent the modern Nicaragua of today. The war ended almost 20 years ago and has left Nicaragua as one of the safest countries to visit in Central America.
The land of Volcanoes and Lakes takes its name from an ancient tribal chief who was so powerful and wise that he is forever remembered in his nation’s collective memory.
Smoking Volcano Concepción has an almost perfect cone shape that seems to rise from the lake and pierce the sky. Visitors who enjoy more than a gentle stroll whilst they are on vacation can climb the volcano and will rewarded by stunning views of Granada, crater lakes and their tropical islets.
Another pastime popular with tourists is the zip lines and canopy tours that are popping up all over Nicaragua. The lines vary in height between 10 and 100 feet and each platform offers the opportunity to rest whilst taking in some of the most majestic views of the coast and or studying the exotic local birds. Brave zippers can fly over canyons at a height of more than 200 feet.
Flights to Nicaragua will need to be researched as there aren’t many direct flights from either North America or Europe. Most people travel into the country by road from neighboring countries, however several options are available.
